Force 12 sailing

I was struck by Stephen Payne’s letter (SM, May) explaining the difference between a liner and a cruise ship. We came back from New York on Queen Mary 2 in May 2019 and were vaguely conscious of a rough sea overnight. Our wakefulness did not last long and we fell asleep again. Only in the morning, when we were having our breakfast, were we informed that we had sailed through a force 12 gale.
