AN EARLY WINGSAIL ON A CARGO VESSEL

The photograph of the coaster Ashington passing Canberra (SM, Nov 2021) brought back happy memories. I was the master of Ashington, which we called ‘Ashcan’ with affection. The wingsail with which she was fitted was on its maiden voyage, having come from King George V dry dock, and the ship was bound for the Shannon, to load a cargo of Alumina for Alcan in Blyth.
