Having fitted a new set of pistons, I was ready to fit the new copper gasket and reach the stage I always love. I think engines look great at this point in the rebuild process; the bright, shiny gold-coloured gasket contrasts so effectively with the sparkling silver pistons and cylinder liners – everything just looks so new!

After one final check, I lifted the cylinder head into position and lowered it down very carefully over the studs and gently onto the gasket. Once the nuts were finger-tight on the studs, I was then able to use my torque
