Matter: Works from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art

With a view to highlighting the material choices artists make, this exhibition entitled ‘Matter’ showcases a selection of gritty, weighty and significant artworks from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art, which traverse a range of artistic mediums. Featured works include paintings by Ethel Carrick Fox, Lisa Wolfgramm, Carol Rudyard and Julie Dowling, ceramics by Joan Campbell, the Hermannsburg Potters Group and Toni Warburton, textiles by Eveline Kotai and Rhonda and Susannah Hamlyn, and installation works by Michele Nikou and Sarah Goffman, among many others.

Lore is more than knowledge and tradition; it takes the concept of past narratives into a contemporary mode of transience. It is about the lived experience and responses to the space we dwell in culturally, metaphorically and physically.

Through painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, assemblage and installation, nine artists from the Illawarra Association for the Visual Arts (IAVA) take on the intangibility of lore by exploring perception, memory, knowledge and the lure of place.
