There’s no shortcut when driving from New York to California, so Hank and Pat Kehrley used a secret weapon, because enjoying the trip was more important than getting there quickly.

“I knew what the Corvette was,” Hank said “Every nut and bolt I had off of it, every bearing I had put back in the transmission. The engine was done, wheel bearings, brakes. It was a brand-new car and it worked out nice.”

Of course, their 1962 Corvette wasn’t really a brand-new car when it made either of its trips, the first in 1995 and the second in 1998. What’s at least as interesting as its total of 23,000 miles in cross-country driving, though, is the California connection that enabled the Corvette to find its way to the Kehrleys’ home in Liberty, N.Y., in 1992.
