Imagine that those of us who have been accustomed to celebrate regularly a certain anniversary must find it difficult, as the years roll by, to distinguish one such occasion from another. For example, the man who has attended 50, or even 20, Derbys, while remembering the winner of each year, probably will quite be unable to recall his own movements on any particular Derby day. Yet he will always retain a vivid mental impression of Epsom Downs, its crowds, the roar of “They’re off!” and the semi-silence while the race is in progress, to be followed by the shouting home of the winner.
