The relentless march of automotive legislation, and a drive to reduce emissions in particular, meant that as good as it was, the tried, tested and trusted SU carb was forced to bow out on Coopers in ’91, and was replaced by single-point injection (SPi). This was thanks to the work of Mike Theaker (BMW/Rover Engine Development Engineer) and his team. Soon, the ‘lesser’ models would be so-equipped. Fitting fuel injection meant that an engine whose design was rooted in the 1950s was now ‘clean’ enough to meet with 1990’s standards. It also produced more power and torque.
