SOSSUSVLEI
For me, the sight of Sossusvlei’s dunes is right up there with Africa’s most natural iconic wonders like Victoria Falls, Table Mountain, The Sahara, Okavango Delta, The Great Rift Valley and the Ngorongoro Crater. It actually flowed earlier this year – for the first time in about three decades – due to the unusual voluminous rain.
There is something otherworldly about this landscape. The dunes are a sight to behold. Choose any superlative and it will likely fit: biggest (over 1000ft), grandest, even oldest (they are five million years old).
My aim was to display their colossal scale by including comparative objects such as trees and animals in the frame. I used a long telephoto lens to capture this effect from a distance, which also helped to compress the scene.
