TARR STEPS
Situated just 2.5 miles south-east of Withypool, this ancient Grade I-listed clapper bridge and woodland leave no doubts about why so many people flock to Tarr Steps (pictured above).
Clapper bridges are constructed using unmortared slabs of rock resting on each other – this splendid 17-span specimen crossing the River Barle is reputedly the longest such bridge in Britain.
According to legend, the bridge was built by the devil, who threatened to kill anyone using it. Matters were only resolved when a local parson confronted the prince of darkness!
The surrounding woodland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and home to a host of wildlife, including bats, deer, dormice and otters.
