Tarr Steps
Situated 2.5 miles south-east of Withypool, this ancient Grade I-listed clapper bridge and woodland leave no doubts about why people flock to Tarr Steps (pictured above).
Clapper bridges are built using unmortared slabs of rock resting on each other, and this splendid 17-span specimen crossing the River Barle is reputedly the longest in Britain. According to legend, the bridge was built by the devil, who threatened to kill anyone using it. Matters were only resolved when a parson confronted the prince of darkness!
