The amount of documentary evidence left by a person’s employment varies a great deal. Some industries kept fastidious records when it came to their staff; others had a more fluid, piecemeal workforce. Shipbuilding archives, for example, frequently contain exhaustive amounts of material about the design and construction of vessels, but relatively little about the people who built them.
