Splashing around in the pool, my friend Mavis and I giggled.

‘This is fun,’ I said.

It was 1945 and aged 17, Mavis’ parents had taken us on holiday.

We were spending the day at Lismore Baths, in NSW.

I couldn’t swim, though, so I was sticking to the shallow end.
