How ready are you?

the deadline for the implementation of the remaining provisions of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) is less than a week away and the gravity of the process has now dawned on people.

Many companies have left it too late, despite having had a grace period of 12 months to ensure they amend their systems, procedures and policies to become fully compliant.

The key sections that come into effect on 1 July include the eight conditions for the lawful processing of personal information, dealing with special personal information (such as race, health, religion) and direct marketing.

The conditions and obligations are quite onerous, particularly for small businesses that process personal information, and special personal information.
