HI PAUL, It was interesting to see Bruce Taylor’s comments about the hand machining required on Russ Clarke’s T-bucket engine inlet manifold; it brought to mind my late father-in-law’s handiwork from his training as an aircraft fitter in WW2.

The three photos show the hand created test piece where the square can fit in any rotation, and pass through, the centre square and the outer slots; I doubt if any feeler gauge would fit between the surfaces. It’s known in engineering parlance as a “slip fit”. He was a carpenter, not a fitter and turner, and he was always meticulous, and his motto was ‘if it’s perfect, it’s good enough’. The good old days!

Cheers, Dave Coursey.
