After over a year of loss, lockdowns and global restrictions, one positive outcome has been a massive uptake in grow-your-own gardening. Confined inside, many people have been discovering the mind-clearing, body-strengthening power of getting some dirt under their fingernails.

One such person is extreme athlete and filmmaker Beau Miles. “Planting trees and growing greens are part my shtick,” says the Australian, who has made a name for himself on YouTube completing gruelling sporting challenges. “I grew up in a household that embraced the dirt,” he says. “My mum’s a horticulturalist, my dad is a veggie gardener and my sister has just written a book about permaculture. But despite being around my whole life, it’s only been recently that I’ve had more time to really focus my energy on it.”
