Yank Buyer’s Guide is Classic American’s two-part guide to the wonderful world of classic American automobiles. We’ll be illustrating the amazing range of cars produced in the US between the years 1949 and 1971, the golden period for Detroit iron. We’ve selected 50 examples in all. Many are undisputed all-time classics, some are our personal favourites, while others were chosen for their special significance, be it styling, engineering or character. But whether you’re a classic American car aficionado or not, we’re sure you’ll have your own opinion about each and every one of these dream machines.

They may inspire you to invest in your first-ever Yank, be it a Fifties land yacht, Sixties muscle car or later model. They may help you decide what American car suits you. On the other hand, these amazing vehicles may make you wish you had a better-paid job! If so, take comfort in the thought that it doesn’t cost a dime to decide which of these dreamboats you’d love to be driving next Saturday night…

We have attempted to give guide prices for all the cars, but don’t take these as gospel. Obviously they are going to depend on condition and other variables and prices vary one heck of a lot, and you should do your own research before parting with your hard-earned pounds (or dollars). As more and more Yanks come on the market, prices will start to be predictable. Until then, the best advice we can give prospective buyers is to keep a close check on prices in the classified section of Classic American and those in the stateside ‘traders’ such as Hemmings Motor News and Hagerty insurance’s website.
