CARVING OUT YOUR OWN NICHE WITH ARTIST AND CREATIVE JAMIE HAMILTON
“I make clothing out of vintage linen I found in the wild.”
My two life-long obsessions are vintage things and style in general. I love the hunt and the process of both, andeither, especially local bricks and mortar stores. If they do have my size, the selection is dismal. I was completely fed up that I couldn’t shop for clothing in a physical store, and thought I’d literally rather wear a sack – funny because it’s true. While plus size vintage clothes are rare, vintage linens are abundant, so I decided to make clothing out of vintage linen I found out and about in the wild. Things like sofa covers, tablecloths, curtains and napkins, among others. And these are all no-sew – just tie or tuck. That way they can still be used for their intended purpose. It’s like, I’m just going to drape myself in a sofa cover and look a million times better than in what’s available to me. Oh, you love my two-piece set? Thanks, it’s actually dusty old drapes. I joke, but I literally do love creating these so much. I started this at the beginning of the pandemic quarantine in 2020 – as a plus size style content creator I was doing more photos at home anyway, so I was using the same vintage fabric as a backdrop. – out of necessity, humour and a pandemic, with many thanks to my assistant and partner Kevin Deel, too.
