It was what I’d dreamed of for the past nine months: my husband, Mark, and I closed the front door behind us, knowing that when we returned, we’d be a family of three. Upstairs the baby’s bedroom was ready and waiting, with soft vests folded in drawers. We’d even wrapped presents for the baby beneath our Christmas tree.

It was 18 December 2015 and three days earlier, my waters had broken. Since then I’d had no contractions, so I was called into hospital to be induced. ‘This is it. We are going to be parents,’ I said excitedly to Mark.
