Netsuke: Miniature Masterpieces from Japan

A taste of Japanese culture is coming to Bristol via an exhibition dedicated to netsuke – miniature carvings often made of ivory and hardwood, originally designed as part of a solution to the lack of pockets in men’s kimonos.

Mostly worn during the Edo period (1603–1868), functioned as toggles. If men wanted to carry small personal items around with them, they would hang them from cords, which wouldwould then be attached to the upper ends of the cords, preventing the suspended items from slipping.
