Switzerland has been recognized internationally as a neutral state for more than 200 years — a position the nation has observed during that time, including both world wars. Although neutral, Switzerland maintains an army for self-defense. In addition, and an advanced defense manufacturing industry has developed within the country’s borders that boasts a worldwide reputation for designing and manufacturing a range of defense products, including electronics, weapons, and vehicles. For example, the company of Mowag, established in 1950, is a recognized leader in the design and production of armored fighting vehicles acquired by a number of client states around the world. These include the Roland, Spy, Tornado, Grenadier, and Piranha.
