Luke Hagerty was on the cusp of fulfilling years of projection and promise.

The towering 6-foot-7 lefthander accepted his sole Division I scholarship offer to Ball State, and in three years on campus he added nearly 10 mph to his fastball and turned into the Cubs’ supplemental first-round pick in 2002.
