A REAL NON-STARTER
Q One of our club members is having difficulties with his 1971 MGB Roadster. Last year, his non-starting problem having been identified as a starter issue, he fitted a reconditioned starter. This appeared to solve the issue at that time. However, shortly after this, the B again experienced problems with not starting.
He tells me his MG has had the twin 6-volt batteries replaced with one 12-volt. He has checked his battery and it shows 12 volts on his meter. The car lights are dim, the ignition light is on but dim. When he switches the ignition on he can hear the pump working but, when he turns the key, nothing happens. He tells me the lights do not change when he tries the starter. I suggested to him that he checks the earth strap at the battery. I know it’s not a lot to go on but any suggestions are welcome.
There are several different faults that can be present under the circumstances you describe and the 12v measured at the battery indicates a battery with some charge but not that well charged. A fully charged battery should be showing a no-load 12.4 to 12.6v reading. Nevertheless,
