Plant out half-hardy and tender plants such as zinnia and cosmos, without fear of frost damage. Dot between perennials for contrasting tones, or create drifts for colourful displays.
✣ Prune spring-flowering deciduous shrubs, such as deutzia and philadelphus, to encourage bumper blooms next year. Cut back old stems as soon as the flowers have faded, to stimulate new shoots.
