Q I’d like to repaint the brickwork of my coastal cottage as it’s flaking and looking a little flat but I’m not sure if I can paint over the old paint? What preparation should I do to ensure even coverage that looks good and lasts?

New surfaces usually require little preparation before being coated in masonry paint, but if you’re working on previously treated brickwork, make sure it is sound, dry and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the paint, including weeds and flakes.
First of all, treat any organic growth with a fungicide, before brushing down the surface to avoid spreading live spores; re-apply after brushing if necessary.
Next, remove all loose or flaking material by scraping or brushing the surface with a stiff bristle brush — do not use a wire brush as it might damage the brickwork. If you’re treating a chalking, weathered, porous or powdery surface, it’s recommended you apply a stabilising solution after brushing, as this product will bind and prime the brickwork and lower its absorbency.
