Researching the history of our homes has become increasingly popular in recent years and it could be said that the lockdowns have made us wonder a little more about the history found within our homes: pondering the lives of past residents who have walked through the same front door, looked out the same windows, and shared time within the same four walls.
Our homes are where we are most ourselves and they reveal a lot about who we are, but life in a house is transformed with each new occupant. While residents come and go, the house remains, and it begins to tell a different story with each new arrival.
I have been researching the social history of houses for over 15 years and in every house, no matter how big or small, or how grand or humble, you never know what extraordinary stories you can uncover. Like the stories found in the television series, ‘A House Through Time’, for which I was research consultant, the ups and downs in the life of a house reveal extraordinary stories of people and events from the past.
