News just in
Last year, when World Press Photo was streamed online and the physical ceremony was cancelled, it was unusual. Now for the second year running, there’s no in-person event, but it’s starting to feel extremely normal for competitions, awards and ceremonies.
Naturally, of course, for 2021 the entries, shortlisted images – and winners – are dominated by the biggest story of our lifetime – Covid-19. There was no shortage of other major news events though, which are also represented in the selection of moving and powerful images. Topics include the Israel-Palestine conflict and the Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd.
The overall winner for a single image went to Danish photographer Mads Nissen, for the photograph titled ‘The First Embrace’, a touching and hopeful moment that represents so much about the global pandemic. Meanwhile, World Press Photo Story of the Year went to Antonio Faccilongo for Habibi. The series chronicles love stories set against the backdrop of the long-running and complicated Israeli-Palestinian war.
