Overhaul of unique Southern 8F gets underway

THE overhaul of Great Central Railway (GCR) based Stanier 8F No. 48624 is underway – and there are hopes that the locomotive’s pressure vessel will not require too much work. The 2-8-0 is one of two 8Fs at the Leicestershire heritage line – the other, No. 48305, is in traffic.

No. 48624 last worked on July 31, 2019, following the expiry of its boiler certificate, which had been extended. The overhaul did not start immediately; the 8F was stored on No. 3 road at Loughborough shed initially.
