QUANGO FEAR

Following the recent publication of the BASC firearms licensing league tables (News, 28 April), I have seen suggestions that firearms licensing be made a national service rather than being the responsibility of individual police forces.

This sounds like a good idea at first glance, particularly for those in poorly performing areas. But the reality is that it will no doubt be administered by some non-accountable entity with the inevitable rising costs of yet another bloating ‘empire’. Can you imagine the chaos if it were
