Looking for a sport to adapt to a pandemic? How about swim, bike and run? Or run, bike, swim? Or bike, swim, run? Triathlon is nothing if not innovative and for the already trailblazing Super League Triathlon, this meant a tech-propelled leap forward with the Arena Games.
A nowhere-to-hide concept that exposes the slightest weakness debuted in Rotterdam in August and returned for 2021 with a double-header that began at the London Aquatics Centre where paratriathlon was now on the bill alongside some of world’s best able-bodied stars.
It made for a star-studded line-up and with a check on form, fitness and honing transition skills ahead of an Olympic and Paralympic summer, this was one event 220 Triathlon couldn’t afford to miss. Which meant – given how fast the action is – we could hardly afford to blink either.
