In our April issue, we told the story of Rabbit, the small 1965 sloop that was the first design of American yachtsman Dick Carter, who entered her in that year’s Fastnet – and won! Two years later, racing Red Rooster, an even more innovative boat of his own design, he won it again, his centreboarder finishing top in the Admiral’s Cup, which contributed greatly to overall victory for the US.

Over the next decade, Carter and his yachts dominated, winning successive World One Ton Cups with the likes of , , and , the Half Ton Cup with and Two Ton Cup with . During the 1972 season, , skippered by Kiwi Chris Bouzaid, ended a great season by finishing top in the Southern Cross series, lifting New Zealand to win
