The New Hollywood Bake-Off
ere at we like a bit of a thematic adjunct. When thinking and its central story of a timid master baker impressing the hoards of an 1820s Oregonian outpost with his scrumptious oily cake, we decided that some kind of story around baked comestibles would be a given. Where we ended up was challenging seven brave souls to come up with a baked creation inspired by one their favourite films from the New Hollywood era. This was a time in America where major studios were placing bets on mavericks and cowboys, handing over sizable budgets for films that didn’t follow demographic patterns or audience tastes. The films of Kelly Reichardt feel like a throw-back to that creatively fecund period, and so we give to you the story of American cinema from the late ’60s and through the ’70s, depicted entirely in the form of cakes and bakes.
