    Chronicling the complicated life of pioneering jazz singer Billie Holiday was always going to be a big task, but director Lee Daniels is one of the few filmmakers up for the challenge. For his 2021 biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday , in cinemas now, Daniels found the perfect screen ingenue to portray Holiday in Andra Day (in her first major film role), but the 1940s and 50s costuming was always going to be the second-hardest thing to nail.
