Be aware of your blood pressure with Dr Harriet Holme

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, doesn’t often cause noticeable symptoms but it shouldn’t be left untreated as it accounts for more than nine million deaths annually. It’s estimated that more than one billion adults currently have high blood pressure and that figure is projected to increase to 1.5 billion by 2025.

A healthy blood pressure sits somewhere between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. Even a moderately raised blood pressure, just outside this range at 135/85mmHg, has been shown to double our risk of a heart attack. There is some good news, however. For every 10mmHg we can lower our blood pressure,
