LEARNING CURVE

Regular readers of this column understand that its main focus is to assist and introduce radio amateurs, especially beginning ones, with and to the many facets of our avocation. Generally, I try to take a complex subject and break into thematically related “bite-sized” chunks. This makes for more manageable learning and better comprehension. Many of you know that I am a retired teacher and one of the personal rewards of teaching is to see students grasp a concept and then own it. Soon success breeds success and we are both well on our way to deeper learning. Teaching is inspiring others, but students also inspire teachers. Truly, teaching is a two-way street.

The same concept applies to writing a monthly column. It is), and I was most impressed with its outside noise suppression. As I recall, I remember the ambient noise level increasing by at least 90 dB as my household filled with six middle-school-aged kids playing video games. I donned the Pro 7 and I immediately escaped the gaming noise and became one with my transceiver. That experience led to my product review and an email six years later. It is gratifying to know that words can inspire. Bob Steele, W4EGJ, sent me a nice email and he kindly gave me permission to publish it. I’m sure my readers can relate to Bob’s narrative.
