California’s governor faces recall: California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom (pictured), will face a recall election after organisers gathered more than 1.6 million signatures for their petition, exceeding the threshold required to trigger a vote. The last recall vote, in 2003, led to the removal of Democratic governor Gray Davis and his replacement by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. Voters will be asked whether Newsom should be removed from office, and if so, who should replace him. The most high-profile Republican candidates to have emerged are Kevin Faulconer, the former mayor of San Diego, and the reality-television star Caitlyn Jenner, says Scott Wilson in The Washington Post. The recall effort began during the Trump era in opposition to Newsom’s immigration policy, but gained momentum after a winter of “rampant” Covid-19 infections and Newsom’s perceived mismanagement of the pandemic.
