PEANUTS PLEASE

I was surprised to discover recently that it is possible to grow peanuts in our climate here. Do you have any tips on how best to approach it?

EMMA SAYS: Peanuts can be grown in the UK, but outdoors they need warmth and a well-drained, preferably sandy soil. If you are in the north you would be best to try growing some in large pots instead.

If you do plant outside, don’t plant until late spring/early summer when the soil temperature is around 18C (65F). You’ll need to buy them as raw unshelled nuts and they can either be planted as they are in
