When we think of anything related to Shetland, often the first image that comes to mind are the small Shetland ponies that children particularly love. And just as these diminutive horses warm our hearts, the yarn from the sheep of Scotland’s Shetland Islands will warm us through and through.
The Shetland Islands were once known as ‘Zetland’ and comprise nearly 100 individual islands off the northern coast of Scotland beyond the Orkney group of islands. Although a Norse dependency from the 8th century, King Christian of Denmark pledged these picturesque islands as a dowry for his daughter on her marriage to King James III of Scotland in 1469.
