Census To Release 1st Results That Shift Electoral College, House Seats

The Census Bureau is set to announce state population counts from its 2020 tally at a 3 p.m. ET press conference. The counts are used to determine representation in Congress and the Electoral College.

The first set of results from the 2020 census will be released Monday, the U.S. Census Bureau has confirmed. The federal statistical agency's acting director, Ron Jarmin, is expected to report new state population counts to the public at a 3 p.m. ET virtual news conference, and the numbers will also be posted on the bureau's website.

The long-awaited announcement is poised to reset the balance of power for the next decade in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College, where each state's share of votes is tied to its census numbers.

The results have been held up for months due to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the last year. Under, these state population numbers were due by the end of 2020. But the that census results will be delivered later than originally planned. A recently renewed a push in Congress to formally extend legal reporting deadlines for the 2020 count.
