Mutilated for money?

Staggering barefoot through the scorching desert, Mary Barnes, 53, knew that time wasn’t on her side.

She knew that her flatmate Michael lay stricken back in the sandy wasteland.

Beaten, burnt, bloody, doused in bleach.

He was dying.

Finally, she stumbled on to a road, where a passing police officer spotted her.
