WE can go to the pub and the hairdresser, but not yet to the theatre. Plays, however, come to us in many forms via the small screen and there have been rich pickings lately. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that it is crazy for television habitually to ignore the theatre. I recently interviewed the 100-year-old Derek Granger, formerly head of drama at Granada, who reminded me that the station once presented the best work (Hobson’s Choice, , ) of the Manchester school of dramatists, as well as a six-play season produced by Laurence Olivier. Could you imagine such events happening today?
