Farming in SA
AGRICULTURE is enormously important in South Africa. Our farmers produce a large portion of the country’s export products and contribute greatly to the local economy, especially as a source of employment.
But due to water constraints, unpredictable weather and a shortage of available land, agriculture as an industry can be unpredictable.
Although 37,9% (46,6 million hectares) of South Africa’s surface area (122,5 million hectares) is used for farming, only about 6% (7,6 million hectares) of SA’s surface area is arable land used for crop production by commercial farmers, while about 29% (36,5 million hectares) is used as grazing land for livestock.
Yet SA’s diverse climate regions – from subtropical to Mediterranean to semi-desert – means a large variety of agricultural products can be produced here.
