J.E. Stamper says he learned more about being a school administrator from a sixth-grade girl than he did while earning his master’s degree in education.
While it was his job as an assistant principal to suspend a student who had gotten in a fist fight during school, Stamper realized the student would return to a home with no food when she asked if she could have the orange on his desk.
The incident caused Stamper to reflect on the some of the difficult situations his students return home to and the rigid ways in which students are disciplined at school—some of which may be ineffective in leading students onto a better path.
