‘One swallow doesn’t make a summer’ and other stories

Swallows have been central to our folklore, mythology and culture since the earliest civilisations., John Keats coined the memorable image ‘gathering swallows twitter in the skies'. Swallows are a popular design for a tattoo, especially among sailors, who choose the bird as a kind of guardian angel, bringing them safely back to their families after a long voyage. However, most of all, as we have seen, swallows are linked with the coming of spring-and all the hope that the new season brings.
