Take a drive down any rural road and you are likely to find one of these topping a barn, gazebo, house or church. We tend to overlook weather vanes and take them for granted, but there is a rich history behind these important pieces of our folklore that should be appreciated and honoured. Hopefully after reading this, you will see these significant pieces of our heritage in another light.

Origin of the Name

Before we had the weather vanes we know and love today, folks used to hang pieces of cloth is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word , which means “flag.” These pennants were crucial in battle, showing archers the direction of the wind.
