You were tipped to earn an England call-up when you suffered a horrendous injury in 2000, playing for Leeds against Besiktas in the Champions League. Are you bitter that it denied you a glittering career?
No, not really. When I snapped my leg out in Turkey, I was told I’d never play again. So, in one sense, everything that came afterwards was a bonus. I spent another 15 years in the game – OK, it wasn’t at the highest level, but there’s no bitterness in me.
