National action plan to provide protection for women

IN A BID for women, children and the vulnerable to feel protected and have no fear of crime, a national action plan (Nap) on women, peace and security was recently launched by the government and civil society.

South Africa is the 85th country to develop a Nap, joining other African countries, including Mozambique and Namibia.

The Nap aims to identify and prioritise key peace and security issues and develop strategic actions. It will enable meaningful participation for women in peace processes and it will prioritise their needs and experiences in conflict and non-conflict contexts.

In 2009, the UN selected South Africa
