No. 1 IS 100 YEARS OLD!

In Hadlow, Kent there are three engines which have reached 100 in 2020: Fowler A9 7hp No. 14754 road locomotive Endeavour, owned by the Pierce family, Aveling & Porter 4hp tractor No. 9225 Clementine owned by Damon Holah and Burrell 8hp No. 3865 Special Scenic Showman’s engine No 1, owned by Terry and Val Maynard. The three engines live within a few miles of each other, but the subject of this article is undoubtedly the most glamorous of the trio.

Burrell Special Scenic No. 3865 left Burrell’s Thetford works on Thursday 18 November 1920 and was delivered by. The engine was put to work driving their new Orton & Spooner Scenic Railway, also called . Pat Collins was part of a large showland family owning some 20 Burrell showman’s engines of one type or another over the years, only seven were bought new the remainder being second-hand.
