STEAM DRAWS THE CROWDS TO CROMFORD

David Reed travelled to the 50th Anniversary Cromford Steam Rally, where a strong line-up of machinery was exhibited in the Peak District on 31 July – 1 August despite conditions being very wet underfoot.

The event was eagerly anticipated as last year’s event was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. The first Cromford rally took place back in 1970, and over the years it has attracted numerous vintage machines to this part of Derbyshire, making this event the main rally in this area of England.

As it turned out though, it could easily have been cancelled again this year, with torrential rain leaving the ground waterlogged in places just days before the event was due to take place. The organisers persisted though, and although the ground conditions were extremely poor at times, the rally did take place, with large crowds attending.
