‘THANK HEAVENS you’re not impulsive,’ said editor James, when I mentioned to the team that I’d bought a 1942 Fordson tractor within a few hours of spotting it on eBay. (He didn’t actually use the word ‘heavens’, but you get the gist.)

His sarcasm was justifiable. I don’t have a need for a a classic tractor. When I saw the classified ad on the ’Bay, I knew this was the one. And then, having shared the object of my desire on Facebook to gauge my friends’ reactions, a very good mate called Paul Matts messaged me to say: ‘Do you fancy going halves on that? I’m serious!’
