From teacher to ‘bulldozer president’

TANZANIAN President John Pombe Magufuli, who died at Emilio Mzena Hospital in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, has been described as a patriotic pan-Africanist leader and visionary by other African presidents.

The country’s vice-president Samia Suluhu Hassan, 61, was sworn in as President of Tanzania on Friday, becoming the first female head of state in the east African country following the death of Magufuli.

Hassan, had announced on public broadcaster Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) earlier that the 61-year-old Magufuli, often referred to as the “bulldozer president”, died from heart complications.
